The series currently comprises nine books, all in various stages of completion:
Most of the characters in the novels are based on place names in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland, many of them close to the tiny village of Findo Gask.
A small and very rural settlement in Perth and Kinross, the hamlet of Forneth lies a mile (1.5 km) northwest of the Loch of Clunie and 5 miles (8 km) west of Blairgowrie.
The 18th-century Forneth House lies three-quarters of a mile (1.25 km) to the southeast of the centre of Forneth. The white-painted house overlooks the northern edge of Loch Clunie and is easily visible from many places on the southern shore.
A village in Perth and Kinross, Butterstone lies on the A923 road from Dunkeld to Blairgowrie, 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Dunkeld. It stands to the north of the small Loch of Butterstone.
Butterstone loch is about half a mile square, presents features of much beauty, contains pike, perch and a few trout, and is connected with Loch Lowes by a stream a quarter of a mile long.
The New School at Butterstone was founded by Baroness Linklater of Butterstone (b. 1943) as a boarding school for children with special needs.
