The series currently comprises nine books, all in various stages of completion:

Most of the characters in the novels are based on place names in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland, many of them close to the tiny village of Findo Gask.

Clunie Village Hall A settlement on the west shore of the Loch of Clunie, eastern Perth and Kinross, Clunie lies in the parish of Stormont, 4 miles (7 km) west of Blairgowrie.

Clunie Primary School is now closed but the local hall survives with regular functions taking place.

On a knoll by the village are traces of a building said to have been used as a base for hunting in the nearby royal forest of Clunie and on an artificial island on the loch are the ruins of Clunie Castle, a tower house of the bishops of Dunkeld built on the site of an Iron Age lake dwelling or crannog.

Robert Crichton, the last pre-Reformation bishop handed the property over to his near relative Robert Crichton of Eliock whose son James, better known as the Admirable Crichton (1560-83), spent his childhood there.

The parish church, rebuilt in 1840, has within its churchyard a mausoleum with a 12th or early 13th Century Romanesque doorway which probably belonged to one of the earlier churches on that site.
