Old Man Madderfy

Once senior partner in the firm of Vale, Madderfy and Logan, Accountants, and therefore once Merton Vale's boss.

Old Man Madderfy is widowed and now officially retired, although he still keeps a close eye on his many business interests. He is the father of Alva Vale and Creagan Madderfy.

Most of the characters in the novels are based on place names in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland, many of them close to the tiny village of Findo Gask.


Madderty church Madderty is a village in Strathearn, Perth and Kinross. It lies on the former railway line connecting Perth and Crieff.

The Gask Ridge and its Roman road lie to the south Madderty road sign and the remains of Inchaffray Abbey to the north.

Madderty is mentioned in a charter of about 1200, at which time there was a church dedicated to Saint Ethernan in the village.
