Most of the characters in the novels are based on place names in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland, many of them close to the tiny village of Findo Gask.


Mills of Earn sign Millearne House is close the Kinkell Bridge and is the traditional home of the Drummond family.

Kinkell Bridge is a tiny settlement in Strathearn, Perth and Kinross. It lies on the River Earn 2 miles (3 km) north of Auchterarder. The ancient parish is now incorporated with Trinity Gask.

A grand four-arched bridge over the River Earn was built c.1793 and alongside is a former toll house.
