The series currently comprises nine books, all in various stages of completion:
Most of the characters in the novels are based on place names in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland, many of them close to the tiny village of Findo Gask.
Located on the northern shore of Loch Creran, Argyll and Bute, the settlement of Creagan is separated from South Creagan by a road bridge that crosses the narrows of Loch Creran.
This was once a railway bridge which conveyed the railway north to Ballachulish but closed in 1966, together with the station at Creagan.
Three miles (5 km) to the northwest lies the settlement of Portnacroish.
Madderty is a village in Strathearn, Perth and Kinross. It lies on the former railway line connecting Perth and Crieff.
The Gask Ridge and its Roman road lie to the south and the remains of Inchaffray Abbey to the north.
Madderty is mentioned in a charter of about 1200, at which time there was a church dedicated to Saint Ethernan in the village.
